Rüstem Paşa Cami (Rüstem Paşa Mosque)

Most beautiful tile collection in Turkey

Close-up on the ceiling of Rustem Pasa Mosque

Located in Eminönü’s famous Hasırcılar Çarşısı (Weavers Market), up an easy-to-miss staircase, is the Rüstem Paşa Mosque, opened in 1563.

The mosque is considered as one of the most important buildings in Istanbul and was built by the chief Ottoman architect and civil engineer Mimar Sinan for the famous Grand Vizier Damat Rüstem Paşa. Rüstem Paşa was also known as the husband of Princess Mihrimah, one of the daughters of Suleiman, the Magnificent. You will recognize that this mosque has only one minaret, as the Paşa, an outsider of the imperial family although married to a princess, was only allowed to build one. On the contrary, princes and princesses could build two, while sultans could build four (as at Süleymaniye) or more minarets (as at Sultanahmet).

Rüstem Paşa Camii houses the richest tile collection of exquisite İznik tiles set to create the most beautiful floral and geometric designs. Rüstem Paşa is the only mosque in Turkey with such an authentic collection of Iznik tiles dating back to the 16th century. We highly recommend visiting this mosque if you have time.

We like: Collection of Iznik tiles.
