A giant collection of history…
The museum was founded in 1891 by Osman Hamdi Bey who was also its first curator. The architect of the neo-Greek building was Alexander Vallaury who also designed Pera Palas, a famous Hotel in the Beyoğlu district.
There are quite a number of well-maintained sculptures and objects here representing thousands of years of history. With over 1 million objects some of which date back to 400s B.C this museum has one of the largest collections in the world. Covered with carvings of battles and the life of Alexander the Great, the Alexander Sarcophagus is certainly one of the most impressive objects to see. Highly recommended.
Open from 9am to 5pm. Closed on Mondays.
We like: Alexander Sarcophagus, Passing Lion.
