Time travel over the Golden Horn
Building a bridge over the Golden Horn was no easy task. Early 1500s, Sultan Bayezid solicited a design for a bridge. However, that proved to be quite a challenge. Let us just say, that Sultan rejected a design by the famous Leonardo; and Michelangelo was not even allowed to participate in this contest. The idea got shelved until 1845 when the first version of the bridge was built.
Galata bridge is a symbol of Istanbul and crossing it signifies moving between the ancient and the modern day Istanbul. We recommend you walk it; and either direction is fine. Don’t be shy and try the balık ekmek, which is Turkish for fish sandwich.
